Joseph Fontano - Secretary-Treasurer
On January 5, 2015 the Local 338 RWDSU Executive Board unanimously elected Joe Fontano Secretary Treasurer, replacing the retired Murray Morrissey. Joe has worked at Local 338 for over eight years and has held several different positions in the Union including Special Projects Representative, Political and Communications Director and most recently, Assistant to the President.

Joe came to Local 338 after spending the previous eight years working in both New York State and City Governments. Joe briefly worked in both the State Assembly and Senate before moving on to the New York City Council. There, Joe worked under two City Council Speakers, Peter Vallone, Sr. and Gifford Miller. During his political career Joe also worked on and managed several political campaigns in Staten Island and Brooklyn.

Prior to his time working in government, Joe spent six years working in A&P/Waldbaums on Staten Island while attending high school and college. Those years in the stores give Joe a real understanding of what Local 338’s membership experiences in the shops on a daily basis. Local 338, RWDSU/UFCW represents over 19,000 men and women working in New York City, Long Island, Westchester, Putnam and Hudson counties, as well as into New Jersey. Local 338’s members include; supermarket and drug store employees, health care workers, pharmacists, delivery workers, dairy workers, and employees at warehouses and numerous other retail food services.

Joe is a graduate of Wagner College where he studied political science. He is a native Staten Islander where he still resides.
